Three Mojo Moves to neutralize an aggressive doubles team off of your return of serve

By USPTA Pro-1 John Frausto

It can be very challenging in doubles to be effective off of your return of serve.  There are many variables to consider.  For example, you have an opponent directly across from you who is looking for any opportunity to put your return away.  Oh yeah, did I mention that you have a player across from you that wants put your return away.  Here are 3 Mojo Moves that will keep an aggresive team on their heels.

Mojo Move #1 - Learn to lob off of the return.  Aggressive teams love to "smother" the net and cut off weak returns.  By lobbing, you get teams out of their comfort zone and out of position.  Now you are in control.  Off of the lob, make sure to follow your lob in and "take" the net.  Turn the table on them.

Mojo Move #2 - Steal time and take balls early.  I like to pressure the serve and take time away from the net person by taking the return inside the baseline.  Regardless of the speed of the serve, I want them to know that I am not phased.  If the serve is BIG, I simply take less of a backswing and use their power against them.

Mojo Move #3 - Hit your strength as much as possible.  If your forehand is your best stroke, hit it as much as possible.  Even if the serve is hit to your backhand side, shade over, move your feet and hit a backhand. especially off of second serves.  Attack second serves as much as possible with your biggest weapon and get your Mojo going on the court.

Happy Hitting.....JF
